Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one…” (Deuteronomy 6:4)

Question 6: Is there more than one true God?

Answer: No. There is only one true God who eternally exists in three persons.

You’ve likely read comics, watched movies, or learned from social studies that many cultures include the worship a plurality of gods. Thinking back to the Ancient Greeks they had many gods who were responsible for different areas of creation and had different agendas. Not so with our God.

God reveals himself to man as having one nature, one will, yet three distinct persons. These persons each fill a role yet maintain the same divine essence and will. This is one aspect of God that makes him unique and separate from creation. All of our worship is offered to one God who has existed since before creation for he himself is self sustaining.

In contrast we are dependant upon God to sustain all of his creation. In one moment he could destroy all that he created in less than a blink of an eye, though he promised Noah that he wouldn’t. The uniqueness and grandeur of God should evoke awe and wonder in all who call on his name as they bow down in worship. At Christ’s return all will be renewed as heaven comes down to earth while sin and evil will be judged and destroyed forever.
